UK Season 5 - Ruby Tates Loves Fish Restaurant - CLOSED

Chef Gordon Ramsay visits Ruby Tates, Brighton, UK, where he finds Alan Love, a former actor turned restaurateur, who owns a oyster/seafood restaurant despite not actually eating seafood himself. Gordon arrives early to surprise the restaurant in a tuc tuc taxi and catch the staff off guard. The restaurant is losing £1000 a week but Alan can't see anything wrong with the restaurant aka The Alan Love Show. Alan trusts his Chefs Jamie and Alex, Jamie is there for the money and Alex is a fiery Frenchman who hates everyone. Gordon arrives and joins a table of customers for lunch to throw the chefs off, he doesn't want them to put on a special effort for him. The customers have offered a platter of fruit de mer, which is usually served cold on ice but this platter is warm. The lobster has the poop sack in and the oyster smells off. Gordon isn't impressed with the decor, there is a pair of knickers on the wall. Gordon also samples the sea bass which is clearly frozen despite them being able to source fresh seafood locally. Gordon speaks to Alan who tells him that he can't get through the summer and he gets upset. Gordon goes into the kitchen to speak to the kitchen staff and discovers that there isn't a Head Chef, the two chefs work together but no one takes charge. Chef Alex tells him that it is hard to get fresh fish, in Brighton, at the seaside... Alan confesses to Gordon that he doesn't eat fish due to getting a bone stuck in his throat when he was 5. Gordon goes into the town to speak to the locals and they think it's a curry house and those that have heard of it aren't impressed with the décor.

Gordon witnesses a dinner service and the customers tell him that the food is tasteless and not warm. He goes into the kitchen and finds pre cooked lobster with the poo sack still inside, he also finds opened mussels that are open, thus they cannot be used as they would poison someone. Alan continues to deny that there is a problem and argues with Gordon about what he has seen so far. They enter the kitchen to talk to the staff and Gordon shows Alan all of the pre-cooked lobster, he continues to be defensive. Gordon visits Alan at home in his house which is on the market, he is selling to raise the capital needed to continue in the restaurant as he has borrowed too much against the house. Alan shows Gordon the books and there is one day where they only sold one beer! Gordon comes up the idea of a simple, home cooked fish and chips using fresh fish. Gordon takes the staff to the fish market to buy fresh fish and Alex admits he was wrong. Gordon shows them a simple fish and chips recipe using fresh pollock, even Alan tries the fish! The fish and chips is a special for the evening and everyone is loving the new fish and chips, Alan takes over £2000 in one evening. The next day they argue about the décor especially the crusty knickers on the wall, to prove his point Gordon takes him to a competing restaurant with a clinical décor. Gordon relays to Alan that he is the personality in the restaurant, he doesn't need the bad décor. The staff have no respect for Alan so he takes them on a fishing boat for a team building exercise, he is to decide who is to walk the plank. He makes Alex and Jamie walk the plank as well as a waiter. Gordon decides to make audition both chefs for the Head chef role, Jamie struggles with the orders at first but pulls it together. Alex doesn't do well, he is flustered, rushing around and a meal is dropped on the floor. Gordon announces his choice for Head Chef,  his new décor in the dining room and the new name for the restaurant. Alan is clearly nervous of the changes but knows deep down that Gordon is right.

For the relaunch evening, Jamie struggles and a lemon sole goes missing. There are local celeb guests in the restaurant including Zoe Ball. The lemon sole is a hit with Zoe and the other fish dishes are a hit. Actor Chris Ellison had visited in the past and enjoys his visit this time. Overall, the relaunch is a success and Alan is finally on board after seeing how much the customers love all of the changes!

What Happened Next? Gordon goes back and orders a takeaway fish and chips incognito putting on a Scottish accent, Chef Alex has been let go and loves is successful. In late 2008, Loves Fish Restaurant closed due to the credit crunch.

In its place now is Pavel, an Indian restaurant.

What Happened Before: Allan Love was in a variety of movies and musicals but also in a band called Opal Butterfly as a vocalist .

  1. Another remarkable episode of Kitchen Nightmares! Fish, fish, fish!!! I hate fish, but french fries are always good, oh beg my pardon, chips. We couldn't believe that Aussie got his act together and became head chef, what a twist! The high point of the episode was the granny who asked Ramsay about his Bollocks. We give this episode a solid 9.0 on the Official Kitchen Nightmare Index Scale Rating System.

  4. Mr. Love,,,,not. Chef Ramsay comes with suggestions that work. He prooved it when he made him some £ by changing the ill (deadly menu). However Mr. Love was stubborn about hie decoe. Pleeeeease, who wants to go to diner and see a pair of, possbly, dirty knickers on the wall? By the way they are called thongs or panties in some parts of the world. Disgusting, Mr. Was terribly offened my Chef's Ramsays suggestions, well maybe he preferred knickers on his wall rather than £ in his pocket. Aparently, he decided on the knickers, since he closed up shop and went on to be a "singer!? Did he really think at his age young girls throw their snickers at him? Oh well maybe the old ladies that were interviewed will. Sorry for Chef's Ramsay's efforts to keep Love above water. He is always called when these restaurants are already drowning in debt due to the owners inability to run their business,THEN BLAMED CHEF RAMSAY FOR THEIR FAILURE! F ALL THESE MORONS! LOVE CHEF RAMSAY

  5. That scene with Allan arguing about the decor felt so contrived, particularly after he allowed Ramsay to change his menu with no shouting (at least on camera). Shame it closed though, would have loved to try some Allan Love/Gordon Ramsay fish and chips one time.

  6. I have one question... who is Allan Love?

I only know of him through this episode of "Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares", so I want to know what he did to become "famous".

    1. he was a singer and actor in 70's 80's. Bloody good voice, bit like Junior Campbell, sadly never really made it but that wasn't due to lack of talent. And he's a really nice guy too.
