Chef Gordon Ramsay visits La Parra de Burriana , Nerja, Spain, a restaurant owned by ex pat Laurence Davy, an ex nightclub manager, he wanted to offer brits abroad something a bit different. He serves Prawns with a chocolate dip and was in £70,000 of debt after borrowing money from his father. Gordon sets down to try the food and discovers the menu is huge serving everything. Gordon orders a filet steak kebab which is described by Laurence as one of his wow factor dishes, it arrives swinging from a hook and Gordon describes it as "swinging like a Donkey's dick". His desert, a creme catalana is burnt. Laurence doesn't believe his food is bad at all and argues with Gordon. Gordon gets frustrated.
The next day Gordon comes to watch a dinner service. He discovers chef Norm is forced to cook on the BBQ serving poached chicken kebabs before orders are in being precooked before being BBQed. He admits that if they are not sold that night they will be reused the next night, Gordon tells them they can't do this and it could be dangerous. Gordon notices he is cooking in the dark and he shows him a wind up torch that he uses for when it gets dark. Gordon sees Alex mismanaging the dining room and watches Laurence's lazy style of cooking, deep frying vegetables and cooking everything on his plauncher grill so all the food tastes the same. After noticing how filthy the kitchen was the night before he arranges to meet the next morning, they are late to turn up and they set about cleaning the kitchen and restaurant. Gordon discovers dog poop on the patio, totally unacceptable but they don't seem too bothered.
Gordon talks to Laurence about a charity event he held for the local donkey charity which was a total disaster. He served them an unset Chicken Liver Parfait and an extremely over cooked chicken dish that was like cardboard, he even had the nerve to charge them for the meal! He knows he needs to win back the locals so goes to visit them at the sanctuary and discovers even more about the night including that there was banana in the chicken main too and that he was very rude to them. He pleads them to return and you can see they are not eager! Gordon decides his next move is to tackle the menu and in order to make them see the flavour combinations he is using aren't working he serves them smoothies of dishes including the prawn and chocolate dish. Laurence tries to resist the menu change so Gordon allows him to serve his menu but have Gordon's menu as a backup to change over if needed. Laurence refuses to do this and the service goes badly, he blames Gordon. Gordon gets annoyed and walks out.
Gordon returns the next day to find there has been a break in, Laurence had not put the money in the bank or in a safe and had left it in a cash box in a filing cabinet and they had quite easily taken the entire summers takings totalling around £4000. He finally caves in to Gordon's help and they change the menu, burning the old ones. On the relaunch Gordon moves Norm into the kitchen to back up Laurence and pot washer Tom goes on the grill. It starts to go well but it becomes clear that Alex has overbooked the restaurant and has double booked tables and only allowed one hour for guests to eat and leave. The donkey sanctuary loved the food but thought the service was pretty poor. The relaunch was only just a success. Gordon leaves but is unsure that they will be there when he returns.
What happened next: Gordon revisits a few weeks later and the Spanish food is still on the menu, he is making a profit and has managed to pay off some of his debts. Gordon revisited again, a year on and they were back to serving bog standard food, the locals were coming back but the tourists still weren't coming in for lunch. There was no Spanish local dishes on the menu. Gordon took him to the beach for a cook off of his boring Pesto Pasta vs Paella, the customers loved the paella and were coming back in and it all set to continue. But...The website is down and according to a post from the Donkey Sanctuary, Lawrence did a runner at some point but the Donkey Gordon gave them has been rescued!
